Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award: India’s ODI and T20 vice-captain Rohit Sharma has awarded India’s highest sporting honour (Khel Ratna Award). He’s the only cricketer among the 5 sports persons to win the award this year. There are 4 other athletes to win this award. Those athletes are Mariyappan T (Para Athletics), Manika Batra (Table Tennis), Vinesh Phogat (Wrestling) and Rani (Hockey).

Other than him, India cricketers Ishant Sharma and Deepti Sharma have received Arjuna award. Thie award recognises special efforts in sports activities. Together with them, 25 other sports persons have also won an award for serving the nation.

The National Sports Awards Committee had already shortlisted Rohitโ€™s name earlier in this week. In fact, it was only a formality that the board announced his name on Friday. The jury has honoured the Mumbai cricketer for his remarkable performance in the blue jersey. Recently his form was worthy to note in the ODI world cup held in 2019. In fact, his 5 centuries within the tournament had set the stage on fire.

What Sourav Ganguly Says

In fact, the BCCI President Sourav Ganguly (Dada) had a talk with media while choosing the players. He said, the jury members went through plenty of data. Also, they all thought of many parameters before short-listing the nominees. Saurav added, Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman. He achieved some scores which people thought weren’t possible within the shorter formats of the game. The board really feel Rohit is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna Award. In fact, as per dada’s views Rohit got this award because of his dedication, control, consistency and leadership skill. Thanks to their on-field success last year; Rohit, Ishant and Deepti deserve the award.

Rohit’s Performance

Rohit scored 556 runs in 5 Tests at an average of 92.66 runs per match. He also scored 1490 runs in 50-over format at an average of 57.30.

However, in recent past Rohit has named as the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019. He grew to become the first player in the game’s history to score 5 ODI centuries in a single edition of the World Cup.

Ishant’s Progress in 2019

Ishant was the 2nd highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket 2019. He picked 25 wickets in six Test matches at an average of 15.56 including two five-wicket hauls.

Deepti’s Recent Match Stats

Earlier this year Deepti Sharma represented India on the MCG in the final match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. In fact, she is at 4th and 5th spot in the ICC Rankings for all-rounders in ODIs and T20Is, respectively Deepti was the 2nd highest wicket-taker for India within the shortest format. She picks 19 wickets in 14 matches in T20. In addition, added 15 wickets to her tally in 12 ODIs.

In the meantime, Rohit has turn out to be the 4th cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to get the Khel Ratna Award. Sachin was the first Indian cricketer to bag the Khel Ratna Award when he did so in 1998. Dhoni got the sporting honour after leading India to the T20 World Cup in 2007. Also, in 2018 Virat Kohli and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu received the award.
