Ram Nath Kovind (born on 1st Oct 1945) is a politician from India. He serves as India’s 14th and current President. Prior to his selection, he served from 2015 to 2017 as the 26th Governor of Bihar. He was also the member Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006. The ruling NDA coalition nominated Mr. Kovind as a presidential candidate. In fact, through this he won the 2017 presidential election. Today (1st Oct 2020) is the 75th Birthday of Mr. Kovind.

Prior History

He had to walk every day up to 8 km away to Kanpur village for schooling. In fact, he walked lot after his elementary school education as well. Mr. Kovind did this to attend junior school; as no one in the village had a bicycle. He has a Bachelor of Commerce degree as well as an LLB degree from DAV College. Kovind went to Delhi to study for the Civil Service examination after graduating in law from DAV College, Kanpur. On his third try, he passed this test, but he did not take part; because he had only scored high enough to work in an allied service rather than in IAS. After that, he practised law.

On 8 August 2015, the nation appointed Shri Kovind as a Governor of the State of Bihar. For upholding the principles of the Constitution, his tenure as Governor earned all-round attention. He implemented many reforms and new technology in the operating of State Universities in his capacity as Chancellor. In fact, he also brought transparency in the selection of Vice-Chancellor. For his statesmanship, sagacity and commitment to the democratic ethos; he won admiration from leaders of all political parties.

Kovind worked as general secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Koli Samaj. This organisation serving the interests of the Koli community, a Dalit subcaste. He used to perform this task under the Delhi Free Legal Aid Society. He was a union authority lawyer at the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979. Also, he became an Indiana Supreme Court lawyer-on-record in 1978.

Elected as a President

The governor of the BJP, Bihar Ram Nath Kovind, had the backing of the ruling coalition of the National Democratic Alliance. He also gets voted against opposition candidate Meira Kumar of the Indian National Congress. Kovind got almost 2/3rds of the votes of elected leaders of the legislative bodies of the federal, state and union territories from the voting process. Later, he gets elected as a President for a five-year term. On 25 July 2017, Kovind’s term of office began.

Kovind rose to the rank of standing counsel for the Union Government in the Supreme Court in 1980. He practised there till 1993. In addition, he served as Prime Minister Morarji Desai’s executive assistant (1977–78). President Pranab Mukherjee, relegating terms such as ‘His Excellency’ to history, accepted a new set of protocols to comprised in the country’s greetings, invitations and addressing VIPs. Though ‘honourable’ will remain for the President and Governors as a reference phrase,’ His Excellency’ has stand out.
